Fast-moving blaze in Lahaina kills 36 and leaves devastation in its wake.  Officials fear the death toll and casualties will rise, but preliminary reports were that the fire that tore through Maui claimed at least 36 lives, wounded nearly 30, forced some at Lahaina Harbor into the ocean to escape flames, and destroyed or damaged at least 271 structures on the Valley Isle. Testimony heard for extension to find new site for Kapolei Landfill. The city’s request for a two-year extension to locate a replacement site for the 34-year-old Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill in Kapolei drew opponents as well as supporters to a hearing over those future plans. Star-Advertiser.

Hawaii Island

Payment to HCC hackers was first for state.  The decision by the University of Hawaii to pay the hackers responsible for a ransomware attack on Hawaii Community College was the first such payment in state history, according to the governor’s office. Tribune-Herald.

Big Island firefighters get upper hand on West Hawaii blazes. As of press time Wednesday, the fire that caused evacuations from Kohala Ranch, Kohala by the Sea, Kohala Estates, Kohala Waterfront and the North and South Fairways at Mauna Kea Beach Resort were still being quenched by fire personnel. Although Lane has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane, it still remains an extremely dangerous storm headed north toward Oahu. Packing maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and located about 180 miles south of Honolulu and 145 miles west-southwest of Kailua-Kona, Lane was headed north at 5 mph at 5 a.m. today, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. Kauai

Waiting for the storm. It was a quiet Thursday around the island as traffic was light and most residents stayed home and visitors stayed in hotels. Garden Island.

When many visitors on Kauai heard Hurricane Lane was barreling their way, they decided to stick it out rather than flee for home. Garden Island.

Red Cross rises to the challenge. After a 12-hour flight from Ohio and a three-hour layover in Honolulu Wednesday, Jan Dayton deboarded the plane at Lihue Airport and headed straight for the Red Cross shelter at Church of the Pacific in Princeville. Garden Island.

Due to Hurricane Lane, cargo flights between Oahu and Kauai have been grounded Thursday and Friday night. Because The Garden Island is printed at Oahu Publications Inc.’s press in Kapolei and delivered to Kauai on those cargo flights, it means TGI’s Friday and Saturday newspapers will not be delivered to homes or available at news stands. Now that's cold. With hurricanes looming, thief takes off with Hawaii Island's only Red Cross truck.

With Hurricanes Iselle and Julio looming, an American Red Cross truck was stolen Wednesday night from the relief organization’s office in Hilo, Hawaii.

“How can anyone be so callous to steal a truck in a time of a disaster?” Barney Sheffield, Red Cross disaster coordinator for the island, wondered to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Volunteers discovered the vehicle was missing this morning as they arrived to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Iselle. The truck is the Red Cross’ only vehicle on the island and used to tow its supply trailer.


Now, that's cold.

Update: The truck was recovered by police at 9 a.m. Friday, after the storm has passed. Big Island Video News.
