Free rooms at the Sheraton, H1N1 vaccines arrive, new beginning for Hilo Hattie, other top news

Sheraton Hotels and Resorts is giving away thousands of free rooms for one night at 86 of its North American properties, Oct. 23.

Secondary schools in Hawai'i were cited in a new national report as leaders in cutting back on sales of junk foods and beverages, such as candy and soda.

Oahu's September home sales and prices climbed in tandem for the first time since 2006, but market watchers peg the upsurge to a rush of first-time buyers and not an overall rebound.

Home sales rose in some categories on the Big Island and Kauai in September, but prices in most markets continued to slump.

The first round of H1N1 vaccinations arrived in the islands on Monday.

It's a new beginning for Hilo Hattie after filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy about a year ago.

Maui County hotels were two-thirds occupied in August, according to a report issued today by Hospitality Advisors in Honolulu.
