Free buses continue on Big Island, Lehua rats, Senate ponders special session on furloughs

Mayor Billy Kenoi is asking the Hawaii County Council to extend free countywide bus service for another year.

Lawmakers are considering a special session to end furlough Fridays

The state Senate is responding to the school furloughs by forming a committee.

The Honolulu City Council last night voted 5-3 to approve a bill designed to shield owner-occupants from larger property tax increases by creating a new category just for them.

Is it still “public access” if it goes through privately owned property?

New bed-and-breakfasts would be allowed up to a certain number, with other restrictions in place aimed at preventing communities from losing a residential feel, under a proposal advanced by the City Council.

Habitat-restoration biologists in August discovered more rats on Lehua, an uninhabited island near Ni‘ihau, and plans are to eradicate the feral animals within two to three weeks, a federal spokesperson said Tuesday.

A dentists convention, a string of Japanese holidays and deep discounts on hotel rooms helped propel Hawaii to its third consecutive month of growing visitor arrivals in September.
